RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
